Chapter 8
Kaurie Durham:
In this chapter, Alice was amazed about every decision that she made. Alice met three playing cards named, five, seven, and two that were gardeners. They were painting the white roses red because the queen would get mad and kill them if the roses weren’t red. Then the king and queen of hearts had arrived. The queen was very surprised by Alice and offered Alice to play a game of croquet. Croquet is supposed to be a very fun and interesting game but the Queen of Hearts took it to far. There were too many rules and if you did not obey by them, you would be killed. Alice decided to step to the side as she realized that the game of croquet was very dangerous. Then, the cat appeared again smiling. Alice began to complain to the cat but quickly changed her words as she noticed the queen started to overhear. The king came over and decided to tell the queen that the cat should be gone. After a while of playing the game, Alice noticed that their was a dispute going on between the cat, the executioner, and the king. The queen threatened to have everybody killed. Alice said that the cat belonged to the Duchess and the cat soon disappeared. The king and executioner started to search for it while everyone else went back to the game.
The Queen of Hearts relates to Queen Victoria in the Victorian era because they were both strict, ruthless, and spoiled. Queen Victoria got her way. If she did not like something that somebody did, she would kill them by cutting off their head. I think that both queens had a passion for killing. Red represents passion and, the three cards-which means trinity and strength- were painting the roses red. White represents purity and innocence. This was the color of the roses before they were painted red so the Queen of Hearts may have been losing her innocence and gaining passion for killing. Queen Victoria had a rough childhood. I think that the red roses represents Queen Victoria’s anger towards what happened when she was a child. Her emotions may be conflicted due to her past. Maybe she is forced into being perfect but she does not want to because she wants to go back to her childhood that she never had. Croquet is supposed to be a very fun and interesting game but the Queen of Hearts took it to far. There were too many rules and if you did not obey by them, you would be killed. The Queen of Hearts may be trying to preserve her true feelings in relating to Queen Victoria. Croquet is a game that is no longer played in the United States. Now, our form of croquet would be golf.
